Future Farmers of America (FFA)

  • Future Farmers of America (FFA) is the largest youth organization in the world, with over 500,000 members. The organization provides opportunities for career and leadership development, as well as scholarship and community service. Nationwide, students earn over $4 billion through work experiences, and over $16 million in scholarships through the National FFA Association.

All students enrolled in an agricultural education class are eligible to participate in the HHS FFA. Students must pay required dues and will have a chance to have their dues paid for them through the annual fall semester fundraiser. A student must be enrolled in an agricultural education class for at least one semester to be eligible for FFA membership.

The HHS FFA offers a wide variety of activities and events throughout the year for its members which are optional. Members are required to attend several meetings throughout the year.

    Fall Semester Activities

Leadership development events allow FFA members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication, team work, and leadership, as well as their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are available. We travel to at least two leadership development events in the fall semester.

    Spring Semester Activities

FFA members may participate in livestock shows if they are interested, but it is not required. Shows include the Hill County Fair as well as state-wide events in Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and Houston.

Career development events (CDE), otherwise known as judging teams, build on what is learned in the agricultural classroom and are designed to help participants put their knowledge into practice. These events help members prepare for a career by testing and challenging the technical, leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, as well as knowledge of the subject matter. Events range in content from horticulture to livestock to agricultural mechanics and farm/business management. We travel to several CDE contests in the spring semester.

Students may also participate in public speaking contests at the end of the spring semester. They present prepared or extemporaneous speeches to a panel of judges.
