The rural community of Hillsboro, Texas has a rich and diverse history. Hillsboro proudly claims the honor of being home to Texas’ first pharmacy, Texas’ first PTA chapter, as well as the hometown of one of Texas’ most illustrious leaders, Bob Bullock. Hillsboro Independent School District (HISD), from its humble beginnings in 1853 when it served 160 children at one small school, has grown to 4-A status and provides a first-rate education to over 2,000 students on five campuses.
Hillsboro ISD, like many districts in Texas, once considered exemplary scores on one-shot, high-stakes tests indicative of high levels of learning. However, we soon realized that many times, students’ scores on state tests did not reflect the qualities, attitudes, and unique talents of our students. Their ability to create, communicate, critically think, and collaborate, which are skills and characteristics that future-focused businesses consider essential, was not included or evaluated on the state test. So in 2011, HISD began to fasten its attention on becoming a learning organization where environments and opportunities were designed and created to promote high levels of learning and to hone skills and attributes vital for future success.
With student engagement and future-readiness as the target, HISD has built a culture of high expectations within a diverse student population. Learning at Hillsboro ISD includes
- collaborating with other critical thinkers to develop authentic solutions to real-world problems,
- communicating personalized learning goals while moving through customized pathways, and
- creating high quality products that demonstrate mastery of learning standards and application of skills that businesses deem necessary.
The district develops each learner academically, emotionally, and socially to become an active participant in the global society. We value every voice and understand that student success relies on school, home, and community partnerships connected by common goals. HISD is a community of caring educators who put students first. We look to serve, lead, support, and build relationships while inspiring excellence.
